Why learn to play a musical instrument?
People of all ages learn to play musical instruments for all sorts of reasons. The beneficial effects on the human brain of studying music have been widely supported by research. Children who are learning to play an instrument tend to progress faster at school in subjects like maths, and also in the development of social skills and self-confidence generally. For adults, it is an enjoyable way of keeping the brain active and fingers supple.
Interesting as these facts are, probably the most important reason for learning to play an instrument is that, once a reasonable standard has been achieved, you will have gained a skill for life which will bring endless pleasure to yourself and to others with whom you are able to share it. What could be more relaxing after a stressful day at work than to sit down at the piano and play something you know and enjoy?
The greatest reward for me in teaching piano is in being able to pass on the knowledge, understanding and skills to someone else, to watch them grow and blossom and to share in the pleasure and sense of achievement they gain from their success.
